ἐκλείπ-ω G1587
To fail, give out, cease; to come to an end or become exhausted
From ek (out) and leipo (to leave), this verb conveys the idea of something running out, giving way, or ceasing to exist. In Luke 16:9 Jesus advises making friends with unrighteous wealth so that 'when it fails' they may welcome you into eternal dwellings. Luke 22:32 records Jesus's prayer that Peter's faith 'might not fail.' Luke 23:45 uses it of the sun's light failing during the crucifixion. Hebrews 1:12 quotes Psalm 102 to declare that God's years 'will not fail.' Spanish 'cesarán/falte' and French 'défaillir' both preserve the sense of exhaustion or cessation.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To fail, give out, or come to an end; to be exhausted or cease functioning. The verb covers both physical and abstract failure: the sun's light failing at the crucifixion (Luke 23:45), wealth running out (Luke 16:9), faith potentially failing under trial (Luke 22:32), and God's eternal years never ceasing (Heb 1:12, quoting Ps 102:27). The multilingual evidence (spa 'cesaran/falte/habiendo fallado,' fra 'defaillir,' deu 'aufhoeren') consistently renders the core notion of something reaching its limit and giving way, whether temporarily or permanently. 4×
