V-FIP-3P  |  5× in 1 sense
To hear and heed, listen favorably; of God answering prayer or of people being heard
A compound of 'into' (eis) and 'hear' (akouo), this verb conveys not just hearing but hearing with favorable response -- the sense of a prayer being answered. An angel tells Zechariah, 'your prayer has been heard' (Luke 1:13), and Cornelius receives the same assurance (Acts 10:31). Jesus warns that the Gentiles think they will be heard for their many words (Matt 6:7), and Hebrews 5:7 says Christ was 'heard because of his reverent submission.' French 'exaucer' (to grant a prayer) and German 'erhoeren' (to answer favorably) beautifully capture this answering dimension, distinguishing it from ordinary hearing.

Senses
1. sense 1 To hear favorably and respond, especially of God hearing and answering prayer. French 'exaucer' (to grant, fulfill a prayer) and German 'erhoeren' (to hear and answer) both distinguish this from mere auditory perception, emphasizing divine responsiveness. Zechariah's and Cornelius's prayers are declared 'heard' with the implication of imminent fulfillment (Luke 1:13; Acts 10:31). In Hebrews 5:7, Christ's anguished prayers are 'heard' because of his godly fear. The passive form dominates NT usage, focusing on the recipient whose prayer reaches God. In 1 Corinthians 14:21, Paul quotes Isaiah where God warns that even through foreign tongues the people will 'not listen' -- a refusal to heed.
