εἰρήν-η G1515
Peace — a state of tranquility, wholeness, and right relationship; the Greek counterpart of Hebrew shalom
Eirene inherits the deep resonance of Hebrew shalom through the Septuagint, carrying far more weight than the mere absence of conflict that the English word 'peace' might suggest. In the Gospels it appears as the greeting of the risen Christ ('Peace be with you,' John 20:19, 21, 26), the gift Jesus promises his disciples (John 14:27), and the condition of those healed by faith ('Go in peace,' Mark 5:34; Luke 7:50). Paul develops it theologically as reconciliation with God through Christ (Rom 5:1) and as a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22). Spanish 'paz,' French 'paix,' and German 'Friede' each carry the same breadth — from political cessation of hostilities to interior spiritual well-being.
Senses
1. peace, well-being, harmony — A state of wholeness, tranquility, harmony, and right relationship — encompassing interpersonal concord, inner spiritual rest, and the eschatological peace of God's kingdom. As the Septuagint's standard rendering of Hebrew shalom, eirene carries covenantal weight beyond mere absence of war. Key passages include Jesus' farewell gift of peace (John 14:27), the risen Christ's greeting (John 20:19), Paul's declaration that believers have peace with God through Christ (Rom 5:1), and peace as a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22). Spanish 'paz,' French 'paix,' and German 'Friede/Frieden' all reflect this comprehensive range. 93×
