In the ancient world, the term applied to coins tested for authenticity ('legal tender'), and this metallurgical background colors its New Testament usage. Paul commends Apelles as 'approved in Christ' (Rom 16:10) and warns that factions exist precisely so that 'those who are approved may be recognized' (1 Cor 11:19).
