Dienekes means 'continuous' or 'perpetual,' and in the New Testament it appears exclusively in the set phrase eis to dienekes ('in perpetuity, forever'). All four occurrences are in Hebrews, where the author contrasts the provisional Levitical system with Christ's eternal priesthood and once-for-all sacrifice. Melchizedek's priesthood has neither beginning nor end (Heb 7:3); the Law's repeated sacrifices cannot perfect anyone permanently (Heb 10:1); Christ sits down forever after a single offering (Heb 10:12); and by that offering he has perfected the sanctified for all time (Heb 10:14). Spanish perpetuamente, French perpetuel, and German immerwaehrend all converge on this single sense of unending duration.
