to escape, get away; to flee successfully from danger or captivity
This verb means to escape, get away from, or flee successfully. Acts 27:42 describes soldiers' plan to kill prisoners lest any 'might escape' by swimming. Classical usage included escaping danger, surviving illness, or slipping from notice. The successful evasion or escape from threat, captivity, or danger is the central concept.

Senses
1. sense 1 To escape or get away from captivity or danger, successfully fleeing. The soldiers' fear in Acts 27:42 was that prisoners 'might escape' during the shipwreck by swimming to shore—a capital offense for guards who lost prisoners. The aorist subjunctive expresses potential escape, the possibility the soldiers wanted to prevent by execution. Translations uniformly recognize successful evasion as the concern.
