Mind, understanding, disposition — the faculty of intellectual and moral discernment; one's way of thinking
The noun dianoia refers to the mind as the seat of understanding, thought, and moral intention. Its most prominent appearance is in the Great Commandment: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind' (Matt 22:37; Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27), where it renders Hebrew lēbāb and emphasizes the intellectual dimension of covenant love. Beyond this, the word describes humanity's fallen understanding — 'darkened in their understanding' (Eph 4:18), 'hostile in mind' (Col 1:21) — and its renewal through Christ (1 John 5:20; Heb 8:10; 10:16). First Peter 1:13 exhorts believers to 'gird up the loins of your mind.' Spanish 'mente/entendimiento' and French 'intelligence/pensée' capture both the cognitive faculty and its moral orientation.

Senses
1. mind, understanding The mind as the faculty of understanding and moral reasoning, particularly in the context of total devotion to God. Anchored in the Shema quotation: 'with all your mind' (Matt 22:37; Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27), where dianoia represents the intellectual engagement required in covenantal love. Also appears in eschatological understanding (1 John 5:20) and the new-covenant promise of God's law written on the mind (Heb 8:10; 10:16). Spanish 'entendimiento' and German 'Verstand' convey this cognitive-devotional sense. 12×
