Derived from gymnos (naked), gymnazo originally referred to athletic training performed unclothed in Greek gymnasia. The New Testament transfers this image to spiritual and moral formation. Paul tells Timothy to train himself in godliness rather than mere bodily exercise (1 Tim 4:7). Hebrews describes mature believers whose faculties have been trained by practice to distinguish good from evil (Heb 5:14), and discipline that yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness for those trained by it (Heb 12:11). Second Peter warns of hearts trained in greed (2 Pet 2:14).
