V-AIA-3P  |  8× in 1 sense
To grumble, murmur, or mutter in discontent; to express dissatisfaction through low-voiced complaint against a person or situation.
A verb capturing the low rumble of collective discontent — the kind of under-the-breath complaining that spreads through a crowd. In the Gospels it appears when the Pharisees murmur against Jesus for eating with sinners (Luke 5:30), when the crowd grumbles because Jesus claims heavenly origin (John 6:41, 43, 61), and when laborers protest unequal wages (Matt 20:11). Paul warns the Corinthians not to grumble as Israel did in the wilderness (1 Cor 10:10). Spanish 'murmurar' and German 'murren' both echo the same onomatopoeic quality found in the Greek, where the repeated gamma sounds mimic the buzzing of discontent.

Senses
1. grumble, murmur To mutter, murmur, or grumble in discontent, expressing dissatisfaction through low-voiced complaint directed against someone or something. All eight NT occurrences share this sense — whether it is vineyard workers protesting the master's generosity (Matt 20:11), Pharisees objecting to Jesus' table fellowship (Luke 5:30), or the Judean crowd disputing Jesus' claim to have come down from heaven (John 6:41, 43). The multilingual evidence uniformly reflects complaining: Spanish 'murmurar,' French 'murmurer,' German 'murren' — each capturing the same grumbling undertone.
