γενν-ητός G1084
born, begotten, brought into existence through birth, born of (woman)
This verbal adjective means born or begotten, describing someone brought into existence through natural birth. Classical Greek used it to distinguish those naturally begotten from those adopted, and to describe mortals (born ones) in contrast to immortal gods. In the New Testament, Jesus uses it in parallel sayings about human dignity and John the Baptist's greatness. He declares that among 'those born of women' there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist (Matt 11:11), with Luke recording the identical phrase (Luke 7:28). The expression 'born of women' is a Hebrew idiom meaning all humanity—every person who has ever lived entered the world through human birth.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Matthew 11:11 and Luke 7:28 contain Jesus's identical assessment: 'Among those born (gennētois) of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.' Spanish 'nacidos', French 'né', and German forms maintain this birth-related meaning. The dative plural modifies 'women,' creating the phrase 'born-ones of women.' Jesus uses this universal category (all humanity) to establish John's unsurpassed greatness among all who have ever lived, while simultaneously showing that kingdom participation transcends even the greatest natural human achievement—a stunning statement about grace and the new creation. 2×
