A neighbor; one who lives nearby in the same community
The noun geítōn designates a neighbor — someone who lives in close physical proximity. All four NT occurrences appear in Luke-John, carrying a warm communal connotation. In Jesus' parable instructions, a host is told not to invite neighbors to a banquet expecting reciprocity (Luke 14:12). The shepherd who finds his lost sheep and the woman who finds her lost coin both call together friends and neighbors to share their joy (Luke 15:6, 9). In John 9:8, neighbors of the man born blind debate his identity after his healing. Spanish 'vecinos,' French 'voisin,' and German 'Nachbarn' all denote this same concept of residential proximity.
