Geenna, a Greek transliteration of Hebrew gē-hinnom (Valley of Hinnom), transforms a specific Jerusalem toponym into the New Testament's primary image of eschatological punishment. The valley south of Jerusalem had become infamous as the site of child sacrifice to Molech (2 Kgs 23:10; Jer 7:31-32), and by the intertestamental period it symbolized the place of divine judgment on the wicked. Jesus uses the term exclusively in the Synoptics, warning that the whole body may be cast into Gehenna (Matt 5:29-30), that God can destroy both soul and body there (Matt 10:28), and that its fire is unquenchable (Mark 9:43-48). James 3:6 extends the image to the tongue 'set on fire by Gehenna.' Spanish 'Gehenna,' French 'géhenne,' and German 'Hölle/Gehenna' all attempt to render this loaded term.
