βλάσφημ-ος G0989
Blasphemous, slanderous; one who speaks abusively against God or others
The adjective blásphēmos describes speech that is injurious, slanderous, or sacrilegious — directed either against God or against human beings. It can function as a substantive meaning 'a blasphemer.' Paul confesses he was formerly a blasphemer (1 Tim 1:13), while the accusers of Stephen suborn witnesses to bring 'blasphemous words' against him (Acts 6:11). In the vice list of 2 Timothy 3:2, it appears among traits of the godless in the last days. Second Peter 2:11 contrasts angelic restraint with those who utter blasphemous judgments. Spanish 'blasfemo/blasfemos' and French 'blasphémateur' reflect both the adjectival and substantive uses.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Speaking injuriously or sacrilegiously, whether against God (blasphemous) or against persons (slanderous); also used as a substantive for one who utters such speech. The range spans personal confession of former blasphemy (1 Tim 1:13), false accusation via fabricated blasphemous testimony (Acts 6:11), a character trait of the last days (2 Tim 3:2), and reckless speech that even angels avoid (2 Pet 2:11). Spanish 'blasfemo' and French 'blasphémateur' confirm the dual adjectival-substantival function. 4×
