N-AMS  |  2× in 1 sense
latrine, toilet, privy, place of defecation
A noun denoting a latrine or privy. Jesus teaches that food enters the stomach and goes out into the latrine (Matthew 15:17; Mark 7:19). The term derives from 'hedra' (seat), with the prefix suggesting a place set apart. It was a euphemistic way to refer to the toilet. Jesus uses it in teaching that external things cannot defile since they pass through the digestive system and are expelled, making the point that moral defilement comes from the heart.

Senses
1. sense 1 Both occurrences appear in the same teaching about clean and unclean (Matt 15:17; Mark 7:19). Jesus traces food's path: mouth → stomach → latrine, demonstrating that food doesn't enter the heart and therefore can't morally defile. Mark adds the editorial comment that Jesus thus declared all foods clean. The parallel passages show this was core teaching about the source of defilement. All four languages use latrine/toilet terminology, handling this delicate subject with similar euphemistic restraint.
