V-IIM/P-3S  |  2× in 1 sense
to spend the night, lodge, camp for the night
A verb meaning to pass the night, lodge, or encamp. Jesus lodged at Bethany during his final week (Matthew 21:17). Luke notes Jesus spent nights on the Mount of Olives while teaching in the temple by day (Luke 21:37). The term originally referred to staying in a courtyard (aule), then broadened to any overnight lodging or military encampment. Classical usage included sheep lying down in folds, birds roosting, or armies bivouacking.

Senses
1. sense 1 Both Gospel occurrences describe Jesus' lodging pattern during Passion Week: staying in Bethany (Matt 21:17) or on the Mount of Olives (Luke 21:37) while teaching daily in Jerusalem's temple. The imperfect tense in Matthew emphasizes habitual action - Jesus repeatedly lodged there. The pattern shows Jesus avoided staying in potentially hostile Jerusalem at night. Cross-linguistic glosses uniformly use lodging/spending-night terminology, with German preserving Greek forms showing recognition of this as a technical term for overnight stay.
