V-AMM-2P  |  4× in 1 sense
to make secure, fasten, guard safely; to fortify a place or restrain a person from escape
Built on the adjective asphales ('firm, secure'), this verb means to make something safe or immovable. All four NT occurrences cluster around the passion-resurrection narrative and Paul's imprisonment. The chief priests ask Pilate to 'make the tomb secure' (Matt 27:64-65), and they proceed to seal the stone and set a guard (Matt 27:66). In Acts 16:24, the Philippian jailer 'fastened' Paul and Silas's feet in the stocks. The semantic thread is consistent: physical restraint or fortification to prevent escape or tampering. Spanish 'asegurar' ('to secure') and French 'garder/proteger' capture both the guarding and fastening dimensions of the verb.

Senses
1. sense 1 To make secure, fasten firmly, or guard against escape or tampering. In the tomb-sealing narrative (Matt 27:64-66), the verb appears three times as the authorities request, receive permission, and carry out the securing of Jesus' burial place. In Acts 16:24, it describes the jailer fastening prisoners' feet in stocks. Spanish 'asegurar' and French 'garder/proteger' both convey the core idea of rendering something physically safe from interference. The sense is consistently one of fortification and restraint — making something immovable or someone inescapable.
