N-NFS  |  3× in 1 sense
certainty, security, safety; firm assurance or protection from danger
This noun denotes security, certainty, or safety. Luke writes his Gospel so Theophilus might know 'the certainty' of the things he was taught (Luke 1:4). The temple guard was found standing at their posts 'in all security,' though the prisoners had escaped (Acts 5:23). Paul warns that when people say 'peace and safety,' sudden destruction will come upon them (1 Thess 5:3). The word bridges intellectual certainty (firm knowledge) and physical security (protection from danger), both of which prove unreliable without divine foundation.

Senses
1. sense 1 Denotes both intellectual certainty and physical security. Luke 1:4 states Luke wrote so Theophilus might know 'the certainty' (ἀσφάλειαν) of gospel instruction—firm, reliable knowledge. Acts 5:23 describes finding everything 'in security' (ἀσφαλείᾳ)—doors locked, guards posted—yet prisoners gone. First Thessalonians 5:3 warns against false confidence when people proclaim 'peace and safety' (ἀσφάλεια). The Greek root meaning 'not stumbling' informs both uses: intellectual stability and protective security.
