V-AIA-3P  |  3× in 1 sense
miss the mark, stray from, deviate from the truth
This verb means to miss the mark or go astray from a target. Paul uses it in the Pastoral Epistles to describe theological deviation. Some have 'missed the mark' regarding certain matters and turned to empty discussion (1 Tim 1:6). Some have 'strayed' from the faith by loving money (6:21). Two men 'missed the truth' by claiming resurrection already happened, upsetting some believers' faith (2 Tim 2:18). The archery metaphor of missing the target applies to doctrinal and moral wandering from truth.

Senses
1. sense 1 Exclusively in Pastoral Epistles, describing doctrinal and moral deviation. First Timothy 1:6 speaks of some who, 'having missed the mark' (ἀστοχήσαντες) from certain matters, turned to fruitless talk. First Timothy 6:21 warns some 'missed the mark' (ἠστόχησαν) concerning faith by craving wealth. Second Timothy 2:18 describes two who 'missed the mark' (ἠστόχησαν) regarding truth, teaching false resurrection doctrine. The German 'abirren' (go astray) and French forms capture the deviation from proper target—doctrinal precision.
