ἄρρωστ-ος G0732
Sick, ill; physically weak or infirm; used of those needing healing from bodily disease.
Describes a person who is physically ill or enfeebled by disease. In the Gospels, it appears in contexts of Jesus' healing ministry—the crowds bring the arrostous to him (Matt 14:14), and the disciples anoint the sick with oil (Mark 6:13). Paul also uses it in 1 Cor 11:30 to describe weakness among the Corinthian assembly. Spanish 'enfermos' and French 'malade' both confirm the consistently medical sense, distinguishing this term from merely spiritual or moral weakness.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Physically sick or ill, describing a bodily condition of disease or infirmity that calls for healing. All five NT occurrences involve concrete physical ailment: Jesus healing the sick (Matt 14:14; Mark 6:5, 13), a promise about laying hands on the sick (Mark 16:18), and Paul's warning about weakness from unworthy communion (1 Cor 11:30). The multilingual evidence—Spanish 'enfermos,' French 'malade'—uniformly points to bodily illness rather than the moral or metaphorical weakness attested in classical Greek. 5×
