V-PNA  |  1× in 1 sense
to interrogate, question intently, catechize
This verb originally meant to teach by word of mouth or dictation, but developed a specialized sense of intensive questioning or interrogation—the kind a teacher uses to test a student or an opponent uses to challenge someone's knowledge. Classical sources pair it with the pedagogical method of oral instruction and examination. Luke uses it to describe the scribes and Pharisees beginning to 'interrogate him vehemently' on many subjects, seeking to trap Jesus with their questions.

Senses
1. sense 1 To interrogate or question someone intensively, often with hostile intent. Luke 11:53 records that the scribes and Pharisees began 'to interrogate him' about many things, lying in wait to catch him in his words. Spanish 'a provocarlo a hablar' (to provoke him to speak) and French 'provoquer' capture the aggressive questioning, while English 'to interrogate' and German preserve the Greek form. The classical sense of catechizing or examining students provides the framework for this hostile interrogation—questioning designed not to learn but to entrap.
