ἀπολύτρ-ωσις G0629
Redemption, release through ransom payment; deliverance achieved by the atoning work of Christ
An abstract noun denoting liberation secured through the payment of a ransom price. In the New Testament it functions almost exclusively as a theological term for the deliverance accomplished by Christ's sacrificial death (Rom 3:24; Eph 1:7, 14; Col 1:14; Heb 9:15). Luke 21:28 extends the concept to eschatological deliverance at Christ's return. Multilingual translations converge on the ransom-release idea: Spanish 'redención,' Hindi 'छुटकारा' (deliverance), Arabic 'الفِداء' (ransom), Korean '구속' (redemption), and Swahili 'ukombozi' (liberation).
Senses
1. redemption, release (deliverance through ransom) — Deliverance or liberation effected through the payment of a ransom, used theologically of Christ's atoning work that secures forgiveness of sins (Rom 3:24; Eph 1:7; Col 1:14; Heb 9:15) and of the eschatological redemption believers await at Christ's return (Luke 21:28; Rom 8:23; Eph 1:14; 4:30). The underlying metaphor of ransom purchase pervades all occurrences, whether applied to present spiritual liberation or future bodily resurrection. 10×
