V-PPA-GMP  |  8× in 1 sense
To disbelieve, refuse to believe, or be faithless; the verbal counterpart of ἄπιστος (unbelieving).
Derived from the alpha-privative prefix (ἀ-) and πιστεύω (to believe), this verb describes the active refusal or failure to believe. It appears at critical narrative turning points: the disciples disbelieving the report of the resurrection (Mark 16:11; Luke 24:11, 41), the divided response to Paul's preaching in Rome (Acts 28:24), and the solemn warning that the one who disbelieves will be condemned (Mark 16:16). The Spanish 'incrédulos' and French 'ne pas croire' capture the same resistant posture. In 2 Timothy 2:13, it takes a striking theological turn — even if we are faithless, God remains faithful.

Senses
1. disbelieve / be faithless To refuse to believe or to be faithless, expressing active unbelief or distrust in a message, person, or reality. The disciples 'disbelieved' (ἠπίστησαν) the women's Easter report (Mark 16:11; Luke 24:11), and some in Rome 'disbelieved' Paul's teaching about Jesus (Acts 28:24). Spanish renders this as 'incrédulos' (incredulous ones), while German uses 'nicht glauben' (not-believe), both highlighting the denial dimension. In 2 Tim 2:13, it shifts to faithlessness in a covenantal sense.
