To set oneself against, oppose, or resist; to array oneself in opposition to authority or persons.
Derived from a military metaphor of arraying troops in battle formation against an enemy, this verb in the New Testament consistently describes resistance to authority or to God himself. James twice quotes Proverbs 3:34 -- 'God opposes the proud' (Jas 4:6; 1 Pet 5:5) -- where the middle voice captures the personal, deliberate nature of divine resistance. Paul warns that opposing governing authorities means opposing God's ordinance (Rom 13:2). Spanish 'resistir/oponerse' and German 'widersetzen' both capture the forceful, intentional resistance the word conveys.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To oppose, resist, or set oneself against, often with the force of deliberate, personal hostility. The middle voice underscores active self-involvement in the opposition. In Rom 13:2 resistance to civil authority is equated with resisting God's arrangement. In Jas 4:6 and 1 Pet 5:5, God himself 'arrays against' the proud -- a striking military image. Acts 18:6 shows Paul's opponents actively resisting his message, and Jas 5:6 speaks of the righteous man who does not resist. Multilingual glosses (Spanish 'oponerse,' German 'widersetzen') consistently highlight the willful, combative character. 5×
