ἀντέχω G0472
to hold firmly to, cling to, be devoted to; to support or help someone in need
In the middle voice, this verb expresses firm attachment or loyal devotion. Jesus uses it in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 6:24) and its Lukan parallel (Luke 16:13) to describe the impossibility of serving two masters — one will be loved, the other despised; one clung to, the other neglected. In 1 Thessalonians 5:14, Paul urges the community to 'hold firmly to' (or help) the weak, while Titus 1:9 requires that elders hold fast to the trustworthy word. Spanish 'aferrarse/adherirse' and French 's'attacher' beautifully capture the tenacious quality of this attachment.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To be devoted to, cling to, or hold firmly in loyalty. In the 'two masters' sayings (Matt 6:24; Luke 16:13), this verb describes the exclusive attachment one gives to a chosen master. Titus 1:9 requires elders to hold fast to sound doctrine. Spanish 'aferrarse/se-adherir' and French 's'attacher' emphasize the tenacious, personal quality of this devotion — not mere agreement but committed clinging. 4×
