V-AIA-3S  |  3× in 1 sense
to go up, ascend; to return or go back
A verb of upward or return movement. Jesus 'went up' on the mountain to teach and heal (John 6:3). After his conversion, Paul did not 'go up' to Jerusalem immediately but went to Arabia (Gal 1:17). Later he 'went up' to Jerusalem to see Peter (Gal 1:18). Classical usage includes ascending mountains, mounting platforms, returning from the coast inland, and rising from the underworld.

Senses
1. sense 1 Denotes upward movement or return to a previous location. John's geographical note (Jesus going up the mountain) sets the scene for bread multiplication and discourse. Paul's precise travel chronology uses it for trips to Jerusalem—his delayed first visit (Gal 1:17) and later consultation with Peter (1:18). The multilingual glosses use ascending/going-up vocabulary (Spanish 'subir/subió,' French 'monter,' German 'hinaufgehen'). Context determines whether literal elevation or return to a significant city (Jerusalem as pilgrimage destination) is primary.
