ἀνά-παυσις G0372
Rest, repose, cessation from labor or trouble; a state of refreshment for body or spirit.
Formed from ana (again) and pauō (cease), anapausis denotes a cessation that brings refreshment—rest in its fullest sense. Jesus offers it as a gift to the weary (Matt 11:29), while the restless wandering of an unclean spirit seeking anapausis but finding none provides a haunting counterpoint (Matt 12:43, Luke 11:24). In Revelation, the word takes two strikingly different turns: the four living creatures have no rest from their worship (Rev 4:8), and the worshipers of the beast will have no rest from their torment (Rev 14:11). Spanish 'descanso' and French 'repos' both carry the warmth of genuine refreshment.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Rest, repose, a cessation from activity that brings genuine refreshment to body or spirit. Jesus promises anapausis to the burdened who come to him (Matt 11:29)—a deep, soul-level rest. The unclean spirit of Matt 12:43/Luke 11:24 wanders through waterless places seeking this same rest but finding none, implying that rest is not merely physical but tied to a proper dwelling place. Revelation uses the term in ironic contrast: the living creatures never cease praising (Rev 4:8), while those who worship the beast find no respite from torment (Rev 14:11). French 'repos' and Spanish 'descanso' consistently render this as restful relief. 5×
