ἀνα-λύω G0360
to depart, to return, to break camp and move on
This verb originally meant to unyoke or unloose, then to break camp, depart, or return. Luke 12:36 depicts servants waiting for their master's ἀναλύσῃ—return—from the wedding feast. Philippians 1:23 expresses Paul's desire to ἀναλῦσαι—depart—and be with Christ, which is far better. The nautical and military background involves loosing ships from moorings or breaking camp to move. Luke applies it to returning home, Paul to death as departure from earthly life. Both involve movement from one state to another, whether spatial return or transition from life to afterlife.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The departure theme appears: Spanish 'vuelva' (returns) and 'partir' (depart), French 'partir,' German preserving the Greek. Luke's context involves a master's homeward return, while Paul's describes death as departing to be with Christ. The military/nautical imagery of breaking camp or casting off moorings fits both—movement from one place/state to another, whether return journey or final voyage. 2×
