V-ANA  |  2× in 1 sense
to consume, to destroy utterly, to use up completely
This verb means to consume utterly, use up, or destroy completely. In Luke 9:54, James and John ask Jesus if they should command fire to come down from heaven and ἀναλῶσαι—consume—the inhospitable Samaritan village. Galatians 5:15 warns that if believers bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not ἀναλωθῆτε—consumed—by one another. The classical background includes spending money, using up resources, and destroying by fire. Luke uses it literally for fiery destruction, Paul metaphorically for community self-destruction through conflict.

Senses
1. sense 1 The consumption theme appears: Spanish 'los consuma' (consume them) and 'seáis consumidos' (be consumed), French 'consumer,' German preserving the Greek. The disciples' desire echoes Elijah calling down fire (2 Kings 1), while Paul's warning depicts mutual destruction. Both contexts involve total destruction—whether by divine fire or communal conflict—emphasizing the completeness of the consuming action.
