V-FIA-1S  |  4× in 1 sense
to return, turn back; to bend one's path back to a previous location
Compounded from ana ('back') and kampto ('to bend'), this verb pictures a path curving back on itself. The Magi return home by another route to avoid Herod (Matt 2:12). In Luke 10:6, Jesus instructs the seventy-two that if a household is unworthy, their peace 'will return' to them—a striking image of blessing boomeranging back. Paul promises the Ephesian elders he will return (Acts 18:21), and the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11:15 are praised for not longing to return to the country they had left.

Senses
1. sense 1 To turn back or return to a place previously departed from, literally bending one's course in reverse. Spanish 'volver/regresar' and French 'retourner' capture the straightforward spatial meaning. Matt 2:12 has the Magi returning by another road; Luke 10:6 metaphorically pictures peace returning to the sender; Acts 18:21 records Paul's promise to come back; Hebrews 11:15 notes the patriarchs' refusal to return to their homeland.
