N-NNS  |  6× in 1 sense
A solemn curse, a thing or person devoted to divine destruction; anathema
One of the most intense words in Paul's vocabulary, anathema denotes something placed under a divine ban -- utterly separated from God's people and devoted to destruction. In Romans 9:3 Paul expresses his willingness to be 'accursed' for the sake of his fellow Israelites. The Corinthian formula 'Jesus is anathema' (1 Cor 12:3) marks the ultimate false confession. Spanish 'anatema' and French 'anatheme' preserve the Greek loanword, testifying to its enduring theological weight across Christian traditions. The conspirators in Acts 23:14 bind themselves 'with a curse,' showing its oath-binding dimension.

Senses
1. a curse, something devoted to destruction, anathema A solemn pronouncement of divine curse or devotion to destruction, applied both to persons and to the act of cursing itself. In Acts 23:14 the conspirators bind themselves 'with a curse' (anathemati) -- Spanish 'con maldicion,' French 'malediction' -- showing the oath-binding function. Romans 9:3 uses it of self-imprecation: Paul would accept being anathema, cut off from Christ, for Israel's sake. In 1 Corinthians 12:3 it is the anti-confession ('Jesus is accursed'), while 1 Corinthians 16:22 and Galatians 1:8 deploy it as a solemn ecclesiastical pronouncement against those who distort the gospel.
