ἀναζάω G0326
to come to life again, to revive, to live again
This verb means to return to life or revive. In Luke 15:24, the father celebrates the prodigal's return: "this son of mine was dead and ἀνέζησεν—has come alive again." Romans 7:9 uses it metaphorically: Paul says he was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin ἀνέζησεν—sprang to life—and he died. Luke uses it literally for restoration to life (though metaphorically applied to the son's spiritual state), while Paul employs it figuratively for sin's activation. Both involve movement from death or dormancy to active life.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The revival theme appears: Spanish 'revivió' (revived), French 'revivre,' German 'wieder lebendig werden' (become alive again). The prodigal son context celebrates return from spiritual death, while Romans describes sin's deadly awakening when law revealed its true nature. Both involve the transition from lifelessness to active existence, whether positive (son's restoration) or negative (sin's deadly work). 2×
