ἀναβαθ-μός G0304
stairs, steps, a flight of steps ascending to a higher level
This noun denotes a flight of steps or stairs. Both occurrences appear in Acts 21 during Paul's arrest at the Jerusalem temple. In verse 35, the violence of the mob was so great that Paul had to be carried by soldiers ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀναβαθμούς—up the stairs to the barracks. Verse 40 states that Paul, standing ἐπὶ τῶν ἀναβαθμῶν—on the stairs—motioned to the crowd for silence. These stairs connected the temple courts to the Fortress Antonia, the Roman garrison overlooking the temple mount. Luke's precise topographical detail places the scene vividly in Jerusalem's architecture.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The architectural term is preserved: Spanish 'gradas' (steps), French 'marche,' German preserving the Greek. Both references describe the same stairway during the same dramatic incident. The stairs mark the boundary between Jewish sacred space below and Roman military authority above, becoming the location where Paul addresses the Jewish crowd before his imprisonment journey begins. 2×
