ἄμᾰχ-ος G0269
peaceable, non-combative, not contentious or quarrelsome
This adjective describes someone who avoids fighting or quarreling, characterized by peaceful disposition rather than contentiousness. Classical usage includes both passive meanings (unconquerable, taking no part in battle) and active senses (impossible to fight). Paul uses it in his pastoral qualifications: an overseer must not be a drunkard or violent but gentle, ἄμαχον—peaceable—not a lover of money (1 Timothy 3:3). Titus 3:2 instructs believers to be ἀμάχους—peaceable—gentle, showing perfect courtesy to all people. Both contexts emphasize non-combative character as essential for Christian leadership and witness.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The non-contentious quality appears consistently: Spanish 'pacíficos' (peaceful) and 'no contencioso,' French preserving the Greek, German 'friedfertig' (peace-ready). Both Pauline passages include it among virtues required of Christian leaders and all believers. The term contrasts with quarrelsome, violent, or contentious behavior, calling instead for a peace-making disposition. 2×
