Together, at the same time; together with (as a preposition governing a dative)
The adverb ἅμα expresses simultaneity and togetherness in two overlapping but distinguishable ways. In its primary adverbial use, it means 'together' or 'at the same time,' describing concurrent action or shared participation: believers caught up 'together' in the clouds (1 Thess 4:17), the crew loosening the anchors 'at the same time' (Acts 27:40), and all having 'together' turned aside (Rom 3:12). In its prepositional use with a dative, it means 'together with' or 'at dawn,' as in the parable of the wheat and tares — 'lest you uproot the wheat together with them' (Matt 13:29) — and the householder going out 'early' (ἅμα πρωΐ, Matt 20:1).

Senses
1. together Together, at the same time — functioning as a pure adverb expressing simultaneity or collective participation without a dependent noun. Paul and the Thessalonians will be caught up 'together' in the clouds (1 Thess 4:17); the crew at Malta loosened the rudder ropes 'at the same time' as hoisting the foresail (Acts 27:40); 'together they have turned aside' (Rom 3:12, quoting Ps 14:3). Multilingual glosses consistently use collective adverbs: Spanish 'juntamente' and 'al mismo tiempo,' French 'ensemble,' German 'zusammen' — all marking shared action or temporal overlap without specifying a companion.

2. together with Together with — functioning as a preposition governing an explicit companion or temporal marker. In Matt 13:29, the master warns against uprooting the tares 'together with' (ἅμα) the wheat, where the word governs an implied dative object. In Matt 20:1, ἅμα πρωΐ means 'early in the morning' (literally 'together with dawn'), a temporal-prepositional use. Spanish 'junto con' ('together with') and the English shift to 'early' in the temporal passage confirm this is a grammatically distinct construction from the bare adverb, requiring a complement to complete its meaning.
