N-NMS  |  12× in 1 sense
Rooster, cock; the domestic fowl whose crowing marks the pre-dawn watch, central to Peter's denial narrative.
The common Greek word for a rooster or cock, appearing exclusively in the Passion narratives across all four Gospels. Jesus prophesies that before the rooster crows, Peter will deny him three times (Matt 26:34; Mark 14:30; Luke 22:34; John 13:38), and the cockcrow becomes the devastating signal of fulfilled prophecy (Matt 26:74-75; Mark 14:72; Luke 22:60-61; John 18:27). Mark's account uniquely specifies 'before the rooster crows twice.' The rooster's crow thus functions as more than a time marker — it is the sound of conscience and prophetic vindication. Spanish 'gallo,' French 'coq,' and German 'Hahn' all denote the same domestic bird.

Senses
1. sense 1 A rooster or cock, the domestic bird whose pre-dawn crowing served as a natural time marker in the ancient world. All twelve NT occurrences cluster in the Passion narrative of Peter's denial: Jesus predicts that the rooster will crow before Peter's threefold denial (Matt 26:34; Mark 14:30; Luke 22:34; John 13:38), and the actual crowing confirms the prophecy (Matt 26:74-75; Mark 14:68, 72; Luke 22:60; John 18:27). The cockcrow functions simultaneously as time signal and prophetic fulfillment. Spanish 'gallo,' French 'coq,' and German 'Hahn' all identify the same common farmyard bird. 12×
