N-AFS  |  3× in 1 sense
immortality, deathlessness; exemption from death and decay
A noun expressing the quality of being beyond death. Paul uses it eschatologically: when the mortal puts on immortality at the resurrection (1 Cor 15:53-54), death is swallowed up in victory. Only God possesses immortality inherently (1 Tim 6:16)—he 'dwells in unapproachable light.' For believers, immortality is the future transformation, not present possession. Classical Greek used it for gods' deathless nature and even for elixirs promising extended life.

Senses
1. sense 1 Denotes exemption from death—God's intrinsic nature and believers' future hope. The 1 Corinthians usage is climactic: the perishable body must 'put on' imperishability, the mortal 'clothe itself' with immortality—garment imagery for eschatological transformation. God alone currently 'has' immortality (1 Tim 6:16), while creation awaits it. The consistent cross-linguistic rendering (Spanish 'inmortalidad,' French 'immortalité,' German 'Unsterblichkeit') reflects the term's transparent meaning across cultures.
