Hades — the unseen realm of the dead, the underworld abode of departed spirits in NT cosmology
The noun ᾅδης (Hades) designates the realm of the dead, the underworld destination of departed souls. In the Septuagint it translates Hebrew שְׁאוֹל (Sheol), and in the New Testament it retains that cosmological sense. Jesus warns that Capernaum will be brought down to Hades (Matt 11:23; Luke 10:15) and declares that the gates of Hades shall not prevail against his church (Matt 16:18). The parable of the rich man and Lazarus locates conscious torment 'in Hades' (Luke 16:23). Peter quotes Psalm 16 to affirm that God did not abandon Christ's soul to Hades (Acts 2:27, 31). Arabic 'الهاوية,' Hindi 'अधोलोक/पाताल,' Korean '음부,' Swahili 'kuzimu.'

Senses
1. Hades (realm of the dead) The unseen realm of the dead in New Testament eschatological and cosmological discourse, functioning as the Greek equivalent of Hebrew Sheol. Used in warnings of divine judgment (Matt 11:23; Luke 10:15), in Christ's declaration of the church's indestructibility against death's domain (Matt 16:18), in the parable depicting conscious afterlife experience (Luke 16:23), and in the apostolic proclamation that Christ was not abandoned there (Acts 2:27, 31). Revelation personifies Hades alongside Death as a power ultimately cast into the lake of fire (Rev 1:18; 6:8; 20:13-14). 10×
