To return, come back (Aramaic); in Haf'el, to restore, give back, or reply
An Aramaic verb equivalent to Hebrew shuv, appearing exclusively in Daniel and Ezra. In the Pe'al (Qal) stem it describes the poignant return of Nebuchadnezzar's reason and royal splendor after his period of madness (Dan 4:34, 36). The Haf'el (causative) stem broadens into two functions: restoring physical objects — as when Cyrus decrees that temple vessels be returned to Jerusalem (Ezra 6:5) — and returning a verbal answer or reply (Ezra 5:5, 11; Dan 2:14; 3:16).

Senses
1. return, give back, restore (Hifil) The Haf'el (causative) stem encompassing both 'to restore, return objects' and 'to return an answer, reply.' Ezra 6:5 commands that the gold and silver vessels of the temple be restored to their place. Ezra 5:5 and 5:11 describe the Jewish elders returning an answer to the Persian governor. Daniel 2:14 has Daniel returning a prudent counsel, and in 3:16 the three companions return their bold reply to Nebuchadnezzar. Spanish 'devolvieron' (gave back) and 'responderte' (reply to you) reflect both sub-senses.

2. return, come back (Qal) The Pe'al (Qal) intransitive sense: to return, come back. All three occurrences cluster in Daniel 4, describing the restoration of Nebuchadnezzar after divine judgment — his reason returned to him (v. 34), and his brightness and royal splendor returned (v. 36). The Syriac cognate tuv and Hebrew shuv share this basic meaning. Spanish 'volvio' (he returned) and French 'retourner' capture the sense of conditions being restored to their former state.
