To go astray, err, or wander; in Hifil, to lead astray; by extension, to be intoxicated or enraptured.
This verb captures the experience of veering off course, whether physically, morally, or emotionally. Its Qal stem covers both deliberate wandering from God's commands (Ps 119:21, 118) and inadvertent error through ignorance (Lev 4:13; Num 15:22). The Hifil causative warns of those who mislead others — Deuteronomy 27:18 curses the one who leads the blind astray. Most evocatively, Proverbs 5:19–20 uses the verb for the intoxicating rapture of love, asking why one would be 'enraptured' by a forbidden woman. French 'errer' and Spanish 'errar' preserve the Latin root-sense of wandering, while 'récréer' (delight) captures the Proverbs love-sense.

1. stray, wander, go astray — To stray or wander from the right path, either literally or in a moral/spiritual sense. Psalm 119:21 and 119:118 speak of those who stray from God's commandments, and Proverbs 5:23 warns that the fool will die for lack of discipline, going astray in his great folly. 2. err, make a mistake — To commit an inadvertent error or sin through ignorance or negligence. Leviticus 4:13 and Numbers 15:22 use the verb for the congregation sinning unintentionally (shagah), and Job 6:24 and 19:4 have Job conceding hypothetically that he may have erred. First Samuel 26:21 records Saul admitting 'I have erred' (shagiti). 3. lead astray, cause to err (Hifil) — Hifil causative: to cause someone to go astray or to mislead. Deuteronomy 27:18 pronounces a curse on whoever misleads the blind, and Proverbs 28:10 warns that the one who leads the upright astray will fall into his own pit. Job 12:16 attributes sovereign authority to God: both the deceived and the deceiver belong to Him. 4. be intoxicated, be enraptured — To be intoxicated or enraptured — a pleasurable losing of oneself, especially in love or wine. Proverbs 5:19 urges the husband to be continually enraptured (tishgeh) with his wife's love, while verse 20 asks why he would be enraptured by a stranger. The root idea of going astray is transformed into ecstatic absorption; the wandering is not moral failure but delighted abandon.
