Rechab; a personal name borne by Ish-bosheth's assassin, the Rechabite ancestor, and a post-exilic builder.
The proper name Rechab (רֵכָב), possibly meaning 'rider' or 'charioteer,' is borne by at least three individuals. Rechab son of Rimmon the Beerothite murdered Ish-bosheth and was executed by David (2 Sam 4:2–12). More prominently, Rechab was the ancestor — through Jehonadab son of Rechab — of the Rechabite community whose strict abstinence from wine and settled life Jeremiah held up as a model of faithfulness (Jer 35:6–19). A third Rechab, father of Malchijah, repaired a gate of Jerusalem under Nehemiah (Neh 3:14). First Chronicles 2:55 links the Rechabites to Kenite origins.
