To dash in pieces, smash violently; used of the brutal killing of children in warfare
A verb of shocking violence, used almost exclusively to describe the wartime atrocity of dashing children against rocks or the ground. In its active Piel form, it names the perpetrator's act -- Hazael will 'dash in pieces' Israel's children (2 Kgs 8:12). In the passive Pual, it describes the victims: Samaria's infants 'were dashed in pieces' (Hos 13:16), Nineveh's children likewise (Nah 3:10). Spanish 'estrellar' (to smash, crash) and 'destrozar' (to shatter) convey the raw physical brutality. The word appears only six times but carries enormous prophetic weight, marking the most extreme consequence of covenant unfaithfulness and imperial cruelty.
Senses
1. be dashed to pieces (passive) — To be dashed to pieces (Pual passive), describing victims of violent destruction in warfare. In Isa 13:16, Babylon's children 'shall be dashed in pieces' before their parents' eyes. Hos 10:14 and 13:16 apply the image to Samaria's fall, and Nah 3:10 to Nineveh. Spanish 'estrellados' (smashed) and 'fue-estrellada' (was smashed) reflect the brutal passive voice -- these are atrocities suffered, not chosen. 4×

2. dash to pieces (active) — To dash to pieces (Piel active), the deliberate act of smashing. In 2 Kgs 8:12, Elisha weeps foreseeing what Hazael will do to Israel's children: 'you will dash them to pieces.' Isa 13:18 attributes the action to invading armies whose bows strike down the young. Spanish 'estrellarás' (you will smash) captures the direct, personal agency of the perpetrator in this horrifying act of war. 2×
