Stubble, chaff — dry plant material used as an image of what is worthless, inflammable, or wind-driven
A masculine noun for the dry stalks and chaff left after harvest, appearing almost exclusively in similes and metaphors. Its literal sense surfaces only once, when the Israelites must gather stubble for straw to make bricks (Exod 5:12). Everywhere else, qash serves figurative purposes: fire consumes enemies like stubble (Exod 15:7; Isa 5:24; 47:14; Nah 1:10; Joel 2:5; Obad 18; Mal 3:19), wind scatters the wicked like chaff (Isa 40:24; 41:2; Jer 13:24; Ps 83:14), and Job compares himself to worthless stubble before God (Job 13:25). Spanish 'paja/rastrojo' and French 'chaume' capture the agricultural substrate of these vivid images.
Senses
1. stubble, chaff, dry stalks — Stubble, chaff, or dry straw remaining after harvest — used overwhelmingly in figurative language for what is insubstantial, flammable, or easily scattered. The sole literal occurrence describes Israelite slaves gathering stubble for brick-making (Exod 5:12). As a fire metaphor it conveys divine judgment consuming the wicked (Exod 15:7; Isa 5:24; 47:14; Nah 1:10; Mal 3:19). As a wind metaphor it pictures the impermanence of the godless (Isa 40:24; Jer 13:24; Ps 83:14). Job uses it for his own perceived insignificance before God (Job 13:25; 41:20-21). 16×
