to pluck off or pull out (twigs, ears of grain, plants); to be plucked
A concrete agricultural verb describing the act of plucking or pulling off vegetation by hand. In Deuteronomy 23:25 it permits plucking ears of grain while passing through a neighbor's field, while in Ezekiel 17:4,22 it appears in the striking eagle allegory where God plucks a tender sprig from the cedar of Lebanon. The Spanish 'arrancar' (to uproot/tear off) and French 'couper' (to cut) capture the forceful manual action. Job 30:4 uses the participle for the destitute who pluck mallow for food.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To pluck off or pull out vegetation—twigs, ears of grain, or plants—by hand. The cross-lingual glosses converge on manual removal: English 'pluck,' Spanish 'arrancar' (tear off), French 'couper' (cut). All five occurrences involve plant material: the eagle plucking cedar twigs (Ezek 17:4,22), gleaning grain (Deut 23:25), the destitute plucking mallow (Job 30:4), and the Niphal passive 'is plucked off' for a plant withering before harvest (Job 8:12). 5×
