To sprout, spring up (of plants or figurative growth); to cause to grow or produce (Hifil); to grow intensively (Piel).
The Hebrew verb tsamach captures the elemental action of sprouting — green life pushing through soil. In the Qal, it describes intransitive growing, from the primordial 'no plant had yet sprung up' (Gen 2:5) to Pharaoh's dream of ears sprouting on a stalk (Gen 41:6). The Hifil adds divine causation: God 'caused to grow every tree' in Eden (Gen 2:9). Spanish brotar, French germer, and German sprossen cluster around the botanical image. Theologically, tsamach reaches its zenith in the messianic title tsemach ('Branch'), where Zechariah declares that 'Sprout' will build the temple (Zech 6:12).

Senses
1. sprout, spring up (Qal) The intransitive Qal sense of sprouting, springing up, or growing, said of plants, vegetation, hair, or figuratively of persons and things that emerge and flourish. With 15 occurrences, this is the base meaning: before any bush 'had yet sprung up' in Eden (Gen 2:5), Pharaoh's dream ears of grain 'sprouting' on a stalk (Gen 41:6, 23), greenery sprouting after the plague of locusts (Exod 10:5), and healed hair 'growing again' in leprosy inspection (Lev 13:37). Spanish brotar, French germer, and German sprossen all converge on the botanical intransitive. Isaiah uses the verb figuratively for new things 'springing forth' (Isa 42:9; 43:19), and Zechariah 6:12 deploys it for the messianic Branch who 'shall sprout from his place.' 15×

2. cause to sprout, produce (Hifil) The causative Hifil sense: to cause to sprout, to produce, to make grow — with God, the earth, or a garden as the agent that brings forth vegetation or offspring. With 14 occurrences, this sense opens with God causing 'every tree pleasant to the sight' to grow in Eden (Gen 2:9), continues through the curse of thorns and thistles (Gen 3:18), and recurs in prophetic speech where God promises 'I will cause a horn to sprout for David' (Ps 132:17; Ezek 29:21). Spanish hacer brotar/crecer, French faire germer, and German wachsen lassen all employ the causative periphrasis. Job 38:27 beautifully pairs the stem with divine sovereignty: God sends rain 'to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth' in wilderness where no human dwells. 14×

3. grow, increase (Piel) The intensive Piel sense of growing or increasing, emphasizing the process or fullness of growth rather than initial sprouting. With 4 occurrences, this relatively rare stem appears in Samson's hair growing back after being cut (Judg 16:22), the humiliated ambassadors told to stay in Jericho 'until your beards have grown' (2 Sam 10:5; 1 Chr 19:5), and Ezekiel's allegory of Jerusalem growing 'like a plant of the field' (Ezek 16:7). Spanish crecer, French grandir/pousser, and German wachsen shift from 'sprout' to 'grow' vocabulary, reflecting the progressive rather than punctiliar nature of the Piel. The distinction from the Qal is subtle but real: the Piel emphasizes sustained development, not initial emergence.
