Thirsty; describing a person or land lacking water, sometimes used figuratively for spiritual longing.
An adjective describing the state of needing water, frequently paired with ra'ev ('hungry') to depict human deprivation (2 Sam 17:29; Prov 25:21; Ps 107:5). Isaiah extends the word into powerful metaphor: the thirsty are invited to come to waters freely (Isa 55:1), and God promises to pour water on thirsty ground and his Spirit on Israel's offspring (Isa 44:3). The Spanish 'sediento' and French 'assoiffé' both preserve both the literal and figurative registers. Deuteronomy 29:19 uses it uniquely in the proverbial expression 'sweeping away the watered with the thirsty.'

Senses
1. thirsty Thirsty, in a state of needing water -- applied to persons, land, or ground. Often paired with ra'ev ('hungry') to express bodily deprivation, as in David's exhausted men (2 Sam 17:29), the righteous treatment of enemies (Prov 25:21), and wandering in the wilderness (Ps 107:5). Isaiah extends the image figuratively: the spiritually thirsty are invited to living waters (Isa 55:1), and parched ground becomes a metaphor for Israel awaiting God's Spirit (Isa 44:3). Spanish 'sediento' and French 'assoiffé' mirror this dual literal-figurative range.
