A Hithpael verb describing the act of rolling oneself in dust or ashes as an expression of intense grief or lamentation. The prophets command this ritual mourning: Jeremiah urges the daughter of his people to wallow in ashes (Jer 6:26) and the shepherds of the flock to do likewise (Jer 25:34). Ezekiel depicts Tyre's mariners casting dust and rolling in ashes in anguish (Ezek 27:30). Micah 1:10 uses it in a wordplay on the city of Beth-le-aphrah ('house of dust').
