To load or carry a burden; to bear as a load (active and passive)
A verb of physical burden-bearing that spans both the active loading of goods onto animals and the passive state of being carried. Genesis 44:13 shows Joseph's brothers loading their donkeys in distress; Nehemiah 13:15 captures Sabbath-breakers 'loading' donkeys with wine and produce. Psalm 68:20 transforms the image: God himself 'bears our burdens daily' (Spanish 'nos carga,' Hindi 'bojh uthata hai'). Isaiah 46:1-3 plays on both voices -- Babylon's idols 'are loaded' onto weary beasts (passive), while Israel has been 'carried' by God since the womb. The contrast between human cargo and divine carrying is central to the word's theological weight.
Senses
1. load, carry actively (Qal/Hifil active) — Active Qal and Hiphil forms denoting the physical act of loading burdens onto animals or carrying loads. Genesis 44:13 has the brothers loading donkeys; Nehemiah 13:15 describes merchants loading produce on the Sabbath; Psalm 68:20 celebrates God who 'daily bears our burden.' Spanish 'cargó' (loaded) and 'nos carga' (bears us) capture both the mundane and theological uses. 1 Kings 12:11 and 2 Chronicles 10:11 extend the image to oppressive royal taxation. 7×

2. be loaded, carried (Qal passive) — Passive Qal participle forms describing the state of being loaded or carried as a burden. Isaiah 46:1 pictures Babylon's idol-images 'loaded' (amUsot) onto exhausted pack animals, while Isaiah 46:3 reverses the image with Israel 'carried' (amusim) by God from the womb. Spanish 'cargadas/los cargados' and Arabic 'muthqalatun/al-mahmulina' preserve the passive weight of objects or people being borne by another. 2×
