weapons, arms, equipment; armory, arsenal

Senses
1. weapons, arms, equipment Collective noun denoting military weapons, arms, or equipment. Used in 2 Chr 9:24 (weapons brought as tribute to Solomon), Job 39:21 (the war-horse rushes toward weapons), Isa 22:8 (the weapons of the House of the Forest), Ps 140:7 (covering the head in the day of weapons/battle), Job 20:24 (fleeing from a weapon of iron), and Ezek 39:9-10 (burning the weapons of Gog). Also 1 Kgs 10:25 and 2 Kgs 10:2 with conjunction. Arabic consistently renders سلاح (silah 'weapon/arms'), Korean uses 무기 (mugi 'weapon') throughout, Spanish armas. The Ps 140:7 occurrence is translated 'battle' in English (metonymy: weapons for the battle in which they are used), but German Schlacht and Korean 전쟁 (jeonjaeng 'war') show the same metonymic extension rather than a separate sense.

2. armory, arsenal A place where weapons are stored, an armory or arsenal. Found in Neh 3:19 with the article (הַנֶּשֶׁק) referring to the armory as a landmark in Jerusalem's wall-rebuilding. Arabic السلاح (al-silah, with locative force), Korean 무기고 (mugigo 'weapon-storehouse'), Spanish la armeria ('the armory'). Hindi renders शस्त्रागार (shastraagar 'weapons-depot'). The Korean compound 무기고 (mugi 'weapon' + go 'storehouse') and Hindi shastraagar make the locative sense explicit, distinguishing this from the collective 'weapons' usage.
