Conj-w | V-Nifal-ConjPerf-3fs  |  2× in 1 sense
lift up, be lifted; raise (eyes or objects)
This Aramaic verb means to lift or be lifted up, appearing in Daniel's visions. Nebuchadnezzar lifts his eyes to heaven after his humiliation (Dan 4:34), marking the moment his sanity returns. Later, Daniel sees a vision where a beast 'was lifted from the earth' (7:4). The verb parallels Hebrew 'nasa' but is the standard Aramaic form. The passive (Peil) form in 7:4 describes something being lifted by external force, while the active form in 4:34 shows deliberate action.

Senses
1. sense 1 Both occurrences appear in Daniel's Aramaic sections. In 4:34, Nebuchadnezzar narrates his restoration: 'I lifted my eyes to heaven'—the physical gesture marking spiritual awakening and recognition of the Most High. In 7:4, Daniel's vision shows a lion-like beast with eagle's wings; 'it was lifted from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man.' This lifting signifies transformation, making the beast human-like. The contrast between self-directed lifting (eyes in worship) and passive lifting (the beast being raised) shows the verb's flexibility. French uses separate words (lever, être levé) to capture the active and passive senses.
