Stew or pottage; a boiled dish of legumes or vegetables, the everyday cooked food of ancient Israel.
A boiled dish prepared from lentils or other legumes, typically cooked in a pot over fire. Most famously, this is the lentil stew for which Esau traded his birthright to Jacob (Gen 25:29-34), where the text specifies it as 'stew of lentils' (nezid adashim). It reappears in the Elisha narrative when a wild gourd is accidentally added to the prophetic community's pot of stew (2 Kgs 4:38-40). In Haggai 2:12, it is mentioned as an ordinary household food in a priestly purity question. The Spanish 'guiso/guisado' and French 'bouillir' both capture the cooked, simmered quality of this simple but significant dish.
Senses
1. stew, pottage — A thick boiled food made from lentils or other legumes, cooked in a pot. The word appears only six times but carries outsized narrative weight: it is the instrument of Esau's forfeiture in Genesis 25:29-34 and the vehicle for a lesson on prophetic provision in 2 Kings 4:38-40. Cross-lingual glosses consistently point to a stew or thick cooked dish (Spanish 'guiso,' French 'bouillir'), not a thin soup. Haggai 2:12 treats it as common fare, suggesting this was a staple food in Israelite households. 6×
